Kirby Super Star Ultra is the Nintendo DS remake of the SNES title, Kirby Super Star. The remake boasts improved visuals, new Sub-Games, Multiplayer, and tweaks to previous content.[1] Kirby Super Star Ultra uses a corkboard to allow the player to choose which game is played.[2] The 2-Player Adventure can only be played by establishing a wireless connection between 2 DS systems.[3] Up to 4 Players can participate in sub-games, only by using Wireless play.[4] Initially only the Spring Breeze minigame is available on the corkboard, but as one progresses through the game, more levels are unlocked.[5]

Gameplay

As expected, Kirby Super Star Ultra's format is mostly a side-scrolling 2 dimensional platforming game. The difficulty varies with the stage selected, helper used, and level of completion targeted. Kirby begins each stage from a starting point, and his goal is to reach an opposite end of the stage. Occasional stages are ended with a Boss battle, and few stages are time limited. Other elements of the formula include Kirby's health meter, obstacles along the way (enemies and environmental), unlockables, and health replenishing foods.

The sub-games' gameplay are unique to themselves and in general are short-time events unrelated to other plots.

The cutscenes and intro/outro reels are presented in 3D graphics. Once unlocked, all can be accessed at the Theater option.

Stages

The majority of the stages in Kirby Super Star Ultra are updated versions of the stages in the original game on which it is based, Kirby Super Star. A few, however, are completely new and exclusive to the DS remake.

Remakes

  • Spring Breeze: An easy introductory stage. King Dedede has Dream Land starved, as he stole all of the food. Kirby ventures through Dream Land until he reaches King Dedede's Castle. After a short battle, Kirby regains all of the food the greedy king took for himself, and redistributes it among the citizens of Dream Land.
  • Dyna Blade: The evidently very vulnerable food supply of Dream Land is at risk once again. Dyna Blade, a giant bird creature, is suspected of terrorizing the local farmers and stealing their crops. Kirby must battle through four more levels, as well as a mini-boss and two hidden areas, before facing off against Dyna Blade.
  • The Great Cave Offensive: Kirby, while venturing through Dream Land, accidentally falls down a gigantic hole. The goal of this stage is to escape the cave, collecting treasure along the way. Among these treasures are classic Nintendo-related items, such as the Screw Attack, Captain Falcon's Helmet, and the Triforce.
  • Gourmet Race: Kirby and King Dedede face off in a race, picking up as much food as they can along the way. The goal, naturally, is to be the first to cross the finish line, but each food item Kirby picks up is added to his total score at the end of the race. After three races, whoever has the most food wins.
  • Revenge of Meta Knight: Meta Knight is attempting to take over Dream Land and rule it himself. Kirby boards the Halberd in an attempt to stop him, destroying parts along the way. Each area of the ship has a time limit, giving the game a sense of urgency. At the end, Kirby and Meta Knight face off against each other, sword to sword, in one of the toughest boss battles thus far.
  • Milky Way Wishes: Travel the stars to wish for the Sun and Moon to stop fighting.
  • The Arena: Maximum Difficulty, 5 Maxim Tomatoes, 19 Boss Fights, and only one helper.

Exclusives

  • Revenge of the King: King Dedede proves he doesn't give up. Settle one more score with him.
  • Meta Knightmare Ultra: Spring Breeze, Dyna Blade, The Great Cave Offensive, Revenge of Meta Knight, and Milky Way Wishes revisited as Meta Knight instead of Kirby.
  • Helper to Hero: Similar to the True Arena, a lone helper battles bosses.
  • The True Arena: Similar to the Arena, but 10 bosses and harder bosses.
